The Police were always too cultured to be real punks, as their debut album proved. Interspersing their terse pop with reggae detours, the trio already displayed an accumen for subtle, shaded pop melodies, although their punk pretentions still occasionally shine through. The speedy Next To You, with its unexpected harmonic chorus, the lithe, reggae verses and poppy chorus of So Lonely, and of course, the album's acknowledged classic, Roxanne, all make this an unusual debut from a band whose first recorded foray was titled Nothing Achieving! The album sounds tight and dynamic, with some superb bass and drum interplay. Stings inimitable vocals leap out, and there is still a rawness and elasticity about the overall sound that is well captured on this disc.
