Coleman Hawkins is frequently identified as the father of the tenor saxophone. Technically, of course, that honor goes to Adolphe Sax, but Hawkins unquestionably gave rebirth to an instrument that had for decades been valuable primarily as a novelty device. Because of his illuminating artistry, over the decades he became the model for hundreds of tenor stylists. In this collaboration with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Hawkins encounters one of his most illustrious spiritual descendants. With a perfect rhythm section headed by pianist Tommy Flanagan, the two tenor men prove that when great artists meet on the common ground of the jazz tradition, there is never a generation gap.
